Summary
Muralist Jean Charlot was born in Paris in 1898 and alter served in the French Army during World War I. His family had connections in Mexico and after the war he went there to develop his skills in mural painting. This book focuses on his three main murals in Georgia, where he as artist-in-resident at the University of Georgia in Athens in the early 1940s. Located in the McDonough Post Office, "Cotton Gin" was installed in 1942 as part of the recovery process after the Great Depression. The mural was commissioned by the government during the New Deal era, as part of the Federal Art Project to help out-of-work artists and supply art for public places. The other two were located on the campus of the University of Georgia. One fresco measuring 9 x 46 feet featured three panels related to art, drama, and music for the Fine Arts Building. The other mural, in the School of Journalism building also had multiple panels portraying Cortes's conquest of Mexico, and the press capturing the actions of paratroopers and a demolition squad in World War II
